Competition

TU Dublin Athletics Club is affiliated to the Irish Universities Athletics Association (IUAA). www.iuaa.org

The club competes in 4 events, which are organised by the IUAA:

  1.  IUAA Road Relay Championships
  2. IUAA Indoor Track & Field Championships
  3. IUAA Cross Country Championships
  4. IUAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

IUAA Road Relay Championships

Each year in November Maynooth University hosts the intervarsity road relays. It usually takes place on a Friday. This is an exciting competition that is open to all college athletics clubs in Ireland.

The event involves 2 separate relay races:

  • Women's Relay

4 make up a team, the first person runs 1 mile, second runs 2 miles, third runs 2 miles and fourth runs 1 mile.

  • Men's Relay

The men's race is slightly different, with 5 on each team. The order of the relay is 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles, 2 miles, 1 mile.

Colleges can enter multiple teams, so whether you'd like to compete at a higher level, or just for fun, there's an opportunity for you to run! This competition is a great opportunity to represent your college and feel part of a team at TU Dublin Athletics.

IUAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

This competition is hosted by the IUAA in February every year. It is a one-day event, that takes place on the weekend. The first six athletes in each event score points for their college. The college with the most points wins. If you'd like to compete for TU Dublin at the highest level in university athletics, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

IUAA Cross Country Championships

This competition is hosted by a different college every year. It is a one-day competition held in autumn, also on the weekend. Each college can enter up to 14 for a women's team and 16 for a men's team. The first 4 women and first 6 men score points for their college, with scoring based on finishing position (1st place = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, and so on). The college with the lowest number of points wins. The women's race is 5km, and the men's is 8km.

Every place counts in these races, so the more people competing the better! Whether you're an experienced cross country runner, or would just like to run and compete for your college, we would love you to take part.

IUAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

This is the biggest university athletics event of the year. It takes place over two days (Friday and Saturday) in April. It is hosted by a different college every year. It uses the same points system as the Indoor Championships to determine the winning college. Similarly to indoors, this is for athletes to compete at the highest level in the country. On the Saturday evening, a meal and awards are held in a local hotel. This is a lovely evening to dress up, celebrate, and wrap up the year of university athletics.

Social Runs

Our weekly social runs are a great way to meet new people and socialise while keeping fit! They are open to runners of all abilities, whether you're just getting into running, recovering from an injury, or just want a shake out run after college. We run at a conversational pace, and take breaks as needed.

The route is a 1km lap on the Grangegorman campus. We usually run 3 or 4 of these laps, depending on the week. We run every week, rain hail or shine! Every few weeks we do a post-run social element, like getting hot drinks or going to a local pub.

Day and time: Mondays at 6:30pm

Meeting place:  Outside the main door of Lower House in Grangegorman

Duration: Approximately 1 hour

What people say:

"Social running was one of the highlights of the week"

"l loved running and chatting with everyone and didn't feel left out or made feel worse just because I was slower."

"Everyone was so friendly, welcoming and including."

"I thought the social runs were really enjoyable and I met lots of new people and friends, while also improving my fitness."
